Our Mission
Lupus Ontario’s mission is to provide vital support, education, awareness, advocacy and research through the fundraising efforts of our staff and volunteer community to help those with lupus live longer, healthier and better lives.
To act as a provincial lupus contact
Lupus Ontario shall maintain its toll-free line and postal address so as to be the provincial contact for people, groups and organizations seeking information about lupus. Lupus Ontario shall also distribute material such as brochures or letters providing information and redirect the public to related organizations (i.e. the Arthritis Society, Lupus Canada, Ontario Lupus Clinics, etc.).
To create provincial programs of public awareness
Lupus Ontario shall be responsible for the design of initiatives relating to provincial issues, and for the production of materials for public participation in such programs. In addition, Lupus Ontario shall create or take advantage of media opportunities for lupus awareness.
To be the provincial advocate for people who have lupus
Lupus Ontario shall act as a provincial advocate on issues relating to lupus.
To create a provincial community of affected people
Through its digital media (social media, newsletter, website) and other in-house publications, Lupus Ontario shall serve as a voice for the Ontario lupus community.
To produce new educational materials
Lupus Ontario with support from its partners shall undertake the publication of original literature for people who have lupus, their families, and friends, and for health care professionals, with concentration in the areas where appropriate information does not exist.
To promote equal access to support services
Lupus Ontario shall actively promote the development of initiatives that promote access to support services. Such promotion will consist of organizational planning, the provision of materials and assistance, if required
To work co-operatively with related individuals and agencies
Lupus Ontario shall attempt to represent the interests of people affected by lupus, in a positive and professional manner, to members of the medical community and to other lupus-related organizations, provincially, nationally and internationally
To support research efforts
- Lupus Ontario shall work to enhance research efforts as it relates to the , prevention, causes, treatment and eventual cure of lupus.
- Lupus Ontario shall endeavour to raise money for research through raising awareness of research work in Ontario.
- Lupus Ontario is committed to advancing funds for research in a fair and equitable manner.
- Lupus Ontario will continue to advocate for the funding of lupus research to Government institutions
- Lupus Ontario is committed to attracting researchers to the cause of lupus and encouraging cooperation in the Ontario research community.
To become self-sufficient through fundraising campaigns
Lupus Ontario’s financial goal is to be self-sufficient. Funds raised through fundraising campaigns shall be used to pay for Lupus Ontario initiatives and to support its operations.
- To enhance the work of the organization
- Lupus Ontario shall work to enhance the resources of its staff, volunteers and board, and their ability to operate more effectively.
To maintain a provincial perspective with respect to the lupus community
In all of its programs, contacts and services, Lupus Ontario shall strive to be representative of the Province.

Lupus Ontario recognizes that screening employees and volunteers is essential for ensuring a safe and secure environment for all employees, volunteers and stakeholders. Lupus Ontario also recognizes that employees and volunteers should be subject to clear, fair and consistent screening standards. The purpose of this policy is to outline who should be screened, when they should be screened, and to what extent they should be screened.

Lupus Ontario is committed to providing a working environment free of violence, harassment and discrimination. This Policy reaffirms the responsibilities of all staff and volunteers in advancing this goal. Any behavior on the contrary towards an individual because of race, creed, colour, religion, country of origin, ethnicity, citizenship, ancestry, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, same sex partnership status, age, marital or family status, or physical ability is unacceptable, and will not be tolerated. Lupus Ontario will treat any allegation of such behaviour as a serious matter.

- To build a positive on-going relationship with donors to stimulate further contribution,
increased giving and inspire non-donors to support the organization. - All donors to Lupus Ontario are appropriately recognized through a uniform recognition
structure for their gift.

Lupus Ontario relies on donations by way of gifts from individuals, corporations and
government in order to achieve its mission. All gifts that are received by the organization are properly documented in order to ensure legislative guidelines are followed. Donors of gifts are recognized accordingly. The purpose of this policy is to appropriately document the responsibilities and guidelines to ensure all gifts received are in accordance with the applicable law.

- Third-Party Events Package: A third-party event is not an official Lupus Ontario event, organized by Lupus Ontario. A third-party event is organized independently (by a volunteer, community group or company) and with Lupus Ontario’s approval. Read the full policy here.
The purpose of the Medical Advisory Committee is to offer advice to Lupus Ontario on
matters of a medical nature that impact the lupus community.
